What is search intent?

Search intent is the underlying goal a user hopes to achieve when entering a query into a search engine, typically categorized as informational, navigational, commercial, or transactional.

Search intent refers to what a user actually wants to find when they type a query into Google or another search engine. Understanding this distinction matters because a query's intent shapes which pages rank and which content serves the searcher best.

The four primary types of search intent are:

  • Informational intent: The user seeks knowledge or answers, such as "how to fix a leaky tap" or "what is SEO." These queries typically lead to blog posts, guides, or explainers.
  • Navigational intent: The user wants to reach a specific website or business, such as "Facebook login" or "Shopee Malaysia." They already know their destination.
  • Commercial intent: The user researches products or services before buying, such as "best digital marketing agency Kuala Lumpur" or "SEO services comparison." These queries show purchase consideration.
  • Transactional intent: The user is ready to complete an action, such as "buy running shoes online" or "hire SEO consultant Malaysia." The goal is immediate conversion.

SEO agencies operating in Malaysia use intent analysis to match content with what users actually need at each stage. Aligning your website and content strategy with search intent improves visibility for the right audience at the right moment. Mismatching content to intent wastes visibility, even for high-ranking pages. Agencies often assess intent to recommend which pages, keywords, and content and link-building strategies will drive qualified traffic and results.
